Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
