Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
