A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
